If the problem persists or if you're just curious, open up your task manager and see if there is anything related to (Microsoft) Visual Studio running but don't just kill the process. If CPU-usage and memory usage remain mostly constant and there is no disk activity for the process for several minutes, this could mean that the process is stuck. You might have to kill it, but proceed with caution. Hopefully if this is an update for Visual Studio, the process name should include a version number or some sort of indication of what kind of update is being applied that you can use to search for more information through a search engine or through Microsoft's online resources.
